Southern Miss wins OT thriller over Georgia State

Southern Miss came back from five down with a minute to go and beat Georgia State 75-65 in OT. USM finished the 1st half on a 11-0 run after trailing 24-21 at one point in the 1st half. Georgia State had a flagrant foul called on them followed by a technical foul called on GSU coach Ron Hunter. Those two events contributed a lot to the 11-0 run. At one point, the Golden Eagles led by 11 points (early in the 2nd half) but Georgia State rallied and took the lead with 3:07 left in the game. The Panthers eventually took a 59-54 lead after RJ Hunter made a long 2-pointer as the 35 second shot clock expired with 56 seconds left in the game. USM had a chance to tie the game, down 3 with 10 seconds left. Jerrold Brooks had a good look at a 3 but he missed. Michael Craig got the key offensive rebound then passed it to Neil Watson on the baseline who knocked down a 3 pointer to send the game to OT. In OT, USM was able to play solid basketball and they out-scored GSU 14-4 in the overtime period. Overall, Southern Miss didn't their best basketball for the majority of the game and was still able to come away with a win. I'll take the W, no matter how ugly it looked.

CBB/CUSA notes

Not much happening in CUSA today. The marquee game of the day in the conference was probably Marshall @ Penn State. The Herd lost 90-77.

FIU was able to rebound from their embarassing loss to Nova Southeastern, the Golden Panthers beat Florida Gulf Coast 72-61 today.

Rice beat South Alabama 94-91 in 3OT. Good win for the Owls.

UAB survived a road scare at Northeastern. Blazers won 74-69.

North Dakota State went on the road and beat Bryant 66-62. Bryant is a top team in the NEC (Northeastern Conference).
